According to research cited Tulane University professor Muira McCammon collected 1,636 reviews from 26 ICE detention facilities and found that reviews had already been disabled at dozens of others. By 2026, most of the reviews she originally archived had disappeared and only a handful of facilities still allowed reviews. Many posts came from former detainees or their families and described conditions inside detention centers. Google said reviews are not shown for some places people "go without choice," such as prisons and similar facilities. Critics argue that regardless of Google's policy, the removals erased a rare public record of what detainees and their families claimed was happening inside those centers.
