Guru Randhawa’s latest track “Fine Shyt” has faced backlash over its title, lyrics and the portrayal of women in a corporate-office setting. Critics online have called the video misogynistic and accused it of objectifying female co-workers. Randhawa responded to the criticism by calling the phrase a “silly little slang” and asking people to calm down, while saying he was “guilty” of making songs that stay in people’s heads. But the bigger question is what popular music normalizes: if songs repeatedly turn harassment, objectification and non-consensual behaviour into romance or entertainment, what message are singers/lyricists repeatedly giving to listeners? Catchy, sure, but is it harmless?
