In 2026, 31 people have d!ed while cleaning sewers and septic tanks across India, but full compensation has been paid in just nine cases, according to the National Commission for Safai Karamcharis (NCSK). Haryana reported the highest number of deaths at eight, followed by Maharashtra and Delhi with six each.
